All square between Deportivo and Espanyol

Deportivo La Coruna were held to a 1-1 draw in their La Liga clash by Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Friday evening.

Celso Borges broke the deadlock on 59 minutes with a well-placed header before Gerard Moreno fired home a 63rd minute equaliser.

After a subdued start to this tie, Przemyslaw Tyton found himself well placed on six minutes to keep out a shot from Pablo Piatti as he latched onto a pass from Victor Sanchez.

Piatti then skewed his next effort wide as Espanyol continued to search for an early goal.

With the hosts getting more into the game after 10 minutes, Moreno saw his header, from an Aaron Martin, delivery flash past the left post.

Piatti then thought he was through on goal after 25 minutes after racing onto a Salva Sevilla through ball, but was called back for offsides.

Hernan Perez was next to go close for Espanyol but placed his 14th minute header from the centre of the park wide, from a Piatti cross.

Both sides sensed an opening in this developing tie, with Borges going close to an opener for Deportivo with a right footed shot from outside the box that flew just wide of the target following a well-worked free-kick.

And with the half winding down, Perez placed his 40th minute shot wide as Emre Colak and Bruno Gama both saw their efforts miss the Espanyol goal.

Roberto Jimenez had to be alert at the start of the second half to keep out a Florin Andone header ahead of an attempt from Borges that hit the bar from outside the box.

Tyton then denied Moreno with a save to the bottom right corner of his goal as Jurado wasted two successive efforts that flew harmlessly wide of the target.

But just when it seemed as if neither team would be successful in finding the back of the net, Borges popped up with a header from an Emre Colak cross on 59 minutes to give Depor the lead.

Espanyol though upped their tempo in search of an equaliser, and Sanchez came close to finding one with an effort he pulled just wide.

But the home fans didn't have to wait too long for an equaliser as Moreno placed a left footed shot from the centre of the park into the bottom left corner of Tyton's goal.

Jimenez then kept his side in the tie with a save from a Raul Albentosa header from the edge of the six yard box with the match winding down.

A second yellow card to Juanfran saw the midfielder dismissed before Jurado came close to winning the tie for Espanyol.

He, however, only succeeded in hitting the crossbar from a difficult angle in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of the match.

And with the last kick of the tie, Moreno placed his late effort just past the left-hand upright after getting on the end of a good Martin cross.
