Malaga have moved quickly to replaced Juande Ramos with assistant coach Marcelo Romero.
The 40-year-old former Alhaurin de la Torre coach is well known by the club having spent six seasons with Albicelestes as a player from 2001 to 2007.
A Uruguayan international, with over 20 caps for his country, Romero rejoined the club in 2014 as part of Javi Gracia's coaching staff.
He continued under Ramos, but now has been backed to succeed the former Tottenham and Real Madrid boss.
A statement from the club read: "Marcelo Romero will stay at the helm of the team.
"The ex-Malaga player and current member of the coaching team over the last three seasons will be head coach of the first team indefinitely."
Romero, who began his playing days in Uruguay with Defensor Sporting and CA Penarol, has already taken his first training session with the club.
