A brace from Spanish forward Fran Sol helped Willem II to a 2-1 win over Heerenveen at Konig Willem II Stadion on Friday night.
An evenly contested affair was blown wide open when Sol broke the deadlock in the 15th minute.
The visitors responded well and put heavy pressure on the Willem II defence.
Ultimately, the hosts’ defence was unable to hold out and Freek Heerkens suffered the indignity of putting the ball in his own net for Heerenveen to pull level.
The sides traded blows throughout the match, but it would be Heerenveen who would retake the lead, through Sol once again, in the 58th minute.
The away side came back into the game well after the goal, but this time they were unable to breach Willem II defence again as the home side clung on for a 2-1 win.
