In a game filled with chances, Paul Pogba went close early on before Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave United a 29th minute lead with a shot into the roof of the net. Spurs had chances to equalise with Christian Eriksen having some of Spurs' best moments.
In the second period, Victor Wanyama missed the away team's best chance when he inexplicably put a free header wide when he probably should have scored. Yet, Paul Pogba nearly made it 2-0 but his powerful free kick smashed against the post with Hugo Lloris beaten.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was the star of the show for the home team, went off injured in the final few minutes with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury as United held on for the win.
In a open and riveting contest at Old Trafford, Manchester United could have hit the front early when Paul Pogba side-footed a shot on target from the edge of the area following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pull back. However, Hugo Lloris got down well to make the save in the third minute.
Tottenham nearly hit back in the 12th minute when Toby Alderweireld picked out Dele Alli in the box but he saw his effort go narrowly wide with Phil Jones in close attention. David de Gea was called into action in the 19th minute when he brilliantly saved Christian Eriksen's goalbound free kick.
It was United's turn five minutes later when Michael Carrick picked out Ander Herrera in the left channel of the big box, and his neat pull back saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan's powerful strike deflected wide off the legs of Jan Vertonghen.
The Red Devils took the advantage in the 29th minute when a Harry Kane mistake saw Herrera set the Armenian free behind Spurs' defence and he blasted a shot into the roof of the net past Lloris. A few moments later Ibrahimovic then had a half chance at the far post after a Antonio Valencia cross, but he couldn't muster enough power on his shot.
Son Heung-min then saw his thunderbolt tipped over the bar by de Gea in the 36th minute in what was a lively few minutes for both outfits. After the break, a good Spurs move saw Kyle Walker tee up Eriksen with a backheel but his fizzing strike was punched clear by United's keeper.
Just on the hour, Victor Wanyama spurned a glorious chance when he missed a free header in acres of space following a Eriksen set piece from the left. Yet it was United who were unfortunate not to make it 2-0 when Paul Pogba's free kick smashed against the post from 30 yards in the 64th minute. The France international then tested Lloris' reflexes with a strike after Mkhitaryan's cross two minutes later.
Disappointingly for United, Mkhitaryan went off injured on a stretcher in the final stages although Jose Mourinho's men held on to a win they just probably deserved.
