The Scout: Your festive season six-pack

Christmas is just around the corner and that means – I can hardly bring myself to say it – the winter break. Before life loses a bit of meaning for a month or so, there are still three match days ahead in the coming two weeks. That presents a challenge not only for Bundesliga coaches, but Official Fantasy Bundesliga managers also need to plan the final straight before the end of the year. And what kind of Scout would I be if I wasn’t prepared to offer you my assistance?

Bundesliga clubs often use the winter break as an opportunity to reshuffle their pack. So you really shouldn’t think beyond 21 December when planning your own squad. I probably don’t need to mention that Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are untouchable up front (or do I!??). And neither that Marco Reus and Arjen Robben will strengthen any Fantasy midfield in the world now that they have returned from injury. But who should you pick to complement these superstars? Don’t worry, help is at hand.

Mitchell Weiser - FOR FOX ONLY

Nico Elvedi (Borussia Mönchengladbach, 7.2M): Like the rest of his team, the Swiss central defender is suffering a dip in form at the moment. But in the run-up to the winter break, I expect Elvedi to start picking up points as usual. Especially when Gladbach don’t seem set to concede too many goals in the fixtures before the winter break (Mainz (H), Augsburg (A), Wolfsburg (H)). At that price, you need to snap him up!

Mitchell Weiser (Hertha Berlin, 11.5M): Of course, Weiser is no insider trade any more. But I felt that after three games out injured, I ought to remind you about the wide-man once again. Home games against SV Werder Bremen and SV Darmstadt 98 offer plenty of potential for points. Sandwiched in between is a trip to leaders RB Leipzig. But still, he remains a must-have!

Leon Goretzka Schalke

Marco Fabian (Eintracht Frankfurt, 10.95M): The Mexican was suspended last week but back in action on Matchday 14. So if you had already sold him, then buy him back! Tackles, goals, assists – Fabian has it all in his locker. This week, Frankfurt are playing TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Friday before travelling to VfL Wolfsburg and hosting 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Leon Goretzka (FC Schalke 04, 11.45M): Goretzka might just be the most complete midfielder in the Bundesliga. And he has everything it takes to be top class in the Official Fantasy Bundesliga. With home games against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and SC Freiburg and a trip to Hamburger SV before the year is out, Schalke’s fixture list looks very promising indeed. A cheaper alternative would be team-mate Alessandro Schöpf (7.35M) who is also a safe bet.

Vedad Ibisevic (Hertha BSC, 11.3M): The Bosnian goal-getter was afforded a rest last time round due to suspension. Fully recuperated, he should hit the goal trail against Bremen. At that price, there is no better striker in Official Fantasy Bundesliga!

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (FC Schalke 04, 13.7M): The Schalke striker is part of my three-pronged attack alongside Lewandowski and Aubameyang. Discarding any unforeseen circumstances, that will remain the case through to the winter break. Strong in the tackle and with a keen eye for goal, Choupo-Moting ticks all the boxes.

I hope you found the right recommendation for your team. For the bargain-hunters among you, Benno Schmitz (DEF, RB Leipzig, 1.3M), Pascal Stenzel (DEF, SC Freiburg, 1.8M) or Dong-Won Ji (FOR, FC Augsburg, 5.9M) could also be interesting. Just don’t tell Matt ‘The Expert’ or James ‘The Coach’. After all, I’m very keen to secure the Christmas championship in our insider mini-league.
