The Red Devils needed a point to ensure they progressed from the group stages and they dominated proceedings in Odessa.

Yuriy Vernydub's men threatened first, though, when Igor Kharatin collected the ball just outside the box on the right and sent a volley dipping towards the left corner in the ninth minute that Sergio Romero pushed away with a dive.

Moments later the hosts went close again as Ivan Petryak fizzed a shot into the side-netting from inside the area on the left.

But it was all United after that promising opening, with Paul Pogba having a personal shooting contest. He came closest to scoring in the 18th minute with a left-footed strike from 22 yards out that went just wide of the right post.

The French midfielder's other long-range shots weren't nearly as close, while he also sent two headers off target on 19 and 21 minutes respectively.

Zorya had a rare foray in the United half on 36 minutes, which ended in Oleksandr Karavayev shooting over from distance, while Eric Bailly went for the spectacular with an overhead-kick that was comfortably saved by Igor Levchenko in the 38th minute.

Wayne Rooney was presented with a chance just before half-time as he linked up with Ibrahimovic and lined up a shot that was stopped at the left post by a diving Levchenko.

But the home team's resistance finally crumbled three minutes into the second half when Mkhitaryan picked up the ball near the halfway line and turned on the power to surge into the box and slot past Levchenko for his first United goal.

Romero had to be alert when Zorya won a 73rd-minute free-kick, which was met by Mikhail Sivakov, whose glancing header was well-saved by the keeper.

Back up at the other end, Marouane Fellaini steered his header wide at the back post from Mkhitaryan's free-kick three minutes later and Ibrahimovic showed good skill to control an aerial ball on his chest before getting off a shot from just outside the area that flew narrowly over the crossbar on 82 minutes.

But the Swede sealed the win and United's progression with two minutes remaining when he latched onto Pogba's through-ball and ran on goal unopposed to beat Levchenko from a few yards out.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah had a chance to add some gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time as he forced a save out of Levchenko with his foot after being played in on the right by Ibrahimovic.
