The Coach: Three favourable fixtures on Matchday 14

It was a case of unlucky Matchday 13 for me last time out and, with Matt ‘The Expert’ racking up 113 points, I’m now only four points off the foot of the Official Fantasy Bundesliga experts’ league and even further adrift of Flo ‘The Scout’ at the summit.

With just three games to go until the winter break, I’m in need of closing the gap before the month-long hiatus kicks in. So, to help me do just that, I have picked three fixtures that will hopefully prove more profitable than last week’s recommendations – thank goodness Michael Gregoritsch saved my bacon!

SC Freiburg vs SV Darmstadt 98

Freiburg had to rely on Alexander Schwolow’s penalty-saving heroics in the 1-1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, but it did little to detract from a thoroughly impressive performance. Back on home soil where they have amassed 12 of their 16 points this season, I fancy Freiburg to return to winning ways against a Darmstadt side dealing with the dismissal of head coach Norbert Meier following five straight losses.

Player recommendations
Pascal Stenzel (DF, 55pts, 1.8M):
Played on the right wing last weekend and racked up an impressive 11 points courtesy of winning 16 challenges. A great low-budget option.

Florian Niederlechner (FW, 66pts, 11.3M): Has picked up at least eight points in his last three games and being a battling forward, Niederlechner should thrive against Darmstadt.

Hertha Berlin vs SV Werder Bremen

The only side yet to drop points in front of home support this season, Hertha have to be considered favourites against travel-sick Bremen, who have picked up two points from a possible 18 on the road. The capital city side have conceded 69 goals in 62 Bundesliga matches since Pal Dardai took over, while Werder have shipped 122 in that same time frame – an astonishing statistic that indicates how their game on Saturday evening could play out.

Player recommendations
Niklas Stark (DF, 96pts, 9.85M):
Stark has been an unsung hero in recent weeks picking up 62 points from his last six games and he’s odds-on to win at least 10 challenges.

Vedad Ibisevic (FW, 120pts, 11.3M): Having missed out through suspension last weekend, a fresh Ibisevic will be relishing the chance to go up against the league’s most porous backline.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs 1. FSV Mainz 05

Recent results haven’t been a fair reflection of Gladbach’s displays. The lack of a clinical touch has scuppered strong performances, meaning the Foals are now without a victory since Matchday 5 and facing a must-win match against Mainz, who they haven’t beaten in their last four encounters. Just like Bremen against Ingolstadt last weekend, though, I’m throwing out the form book and backing Gladbach to bounce back to winning ways.

Player recommendations
Christoph Kramer (MF, 72pts, 13.2M):
He may not get on the scoresheet, but averaging almost 13 challenges won a game means Kramer guarantees a steady stream of points.

Thorgan Hazard (FW, 56pts, 10.85M): A risky pick based on Gladbach’s goalscoring form, but Hazard is trigger happy and wins an average of over 10 challenges a game. Worth a punt!

If you’re looking for short-term gains then take a look at RB Leipzig’s trip to bottom-of-the-table FC Ingolstadt 04 this weekend, but beware of their final two fixtures before the winter break. Good luck this weekend!
