A plane carrying Brazilian side Chapecoense to their Copa Sudamericana Final against Atletico Nacional has crashed in Colombia.
The Civil Aviation authority of Colombia has confirmed that the charter flight carrying Brazil Serie A team Chapecoense crashed early on Tuesday morning (CAT) in the vicinity of Rionegro city, in the Antioquia Department, northwest Colombia.
There were 72 passengers and nine crew on board flight LMI 2933, which was on its way from Santa Cruz de la Sierra in eastern Bolivia to Medellin – just 50km away from Rionegro.
The Santa Catarina-based club were on their way to the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana Final against Colombian club Atletico Nacional, scheduled for Wednesday.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Jose Maria Cordova de Rionegro airport said: "Confirmed, the aircraft licence number CP2933 was carrying the team @ChapecoenseReal. Apparently there are survivors."
A later statement added that "all possible aid was being mobilised because six survivors are being reported".
