Internazionale climbed into the top-half of the Serie A table after they ran out 4-2 victors over 10-man Fiorentina in an enthralling encounter at the San Siro on Monday.
The hosts raced into an early three-goal lead thanks to strikes from Marcelo Brozovic (3'), Antonio Candreva (9') and Mauro Icardi (19'), although La Viola managed to pull one back through Nikola Kalinic (37') before half-time.
However, the visitors' hopes of a fightback were dented soon afterwards when Gonzalo Rodriguez received a straight red card in first-half stoppage time.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Josip Ilicic reduced the deficit even further for Paulo Sousa's side on 62 minutes, before Icardi sealed the win at the death with his second goal.
Inter extended their unbeaten run in the top flight to three matches as they moved one place above the Tuscany club into eighth.
Earlier in the evening, Napoli lost more ground on the front-runners after they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Sassuolo at Stadio San Paolo.
Lorenzo Insigne's 42nd-minute opener looked to have given the hosts all three points in Naples, after they had slipped nine points off the league summit.
But Gregoire Defrel dashed their hopes with an equaliser eight minutes from time to halt a four-match losing streak for the 16th-placed Neroverdi, while Maurizio Sarri's side are seventh, three points adrift of the European spots.
