Match Summary

Despite playing at home and being heavily favoured ahead of their match against, Bayern were run all the way by an impressive Leverkusen outfit. They started well and had the lead through Thiago Alcantara in the 30th minute, but it didn’t last long as Hakan Calhanoglu leveled matters just five minutes later.

The game was very close, but Mats Hummels was able to grab the winning goal for the Bavarians 11 minutes after half time.

Full Report

The visitors started strongly and Admir fired a warning shot inches wide in just the second minute of the game. However, it did not take long for Bayern to work themselves into the game and Thomas Muller flashed a shot narrowly wide in response seven minutes later.

The sides traded blows throughout the game and the match statistics showed just how close the game was, with possession split 54%-46% in favour of the hosts and both teams producing 13 shots at goal.

It would be the hosts who would strike first as Alcantara pounced on some confusion in the Leverkusen box to leap above the defence and head a rebounded strike into the back of the net and give his side the lead in the 30th minute.

Unfortunately for Bavarian fans, the advantage lasted less than five minutes with Julian Brandt showed some marvelous skill to set up Calhanoglu, who powered his shot past Manuel Neuer to make it 1-1.

After half time, Douglas Costa forced two wonderful saves out of Bernd Leno, first with a stunning long-range shot and then with another from the edge of the area.

They would eventually make their period of dominance pay when Mats Hummels got above the defence at a 56th minute corner to head his side into a 2-1 lead with a powerful nod.

Kevin Volland blew a guilt-edged chance late on to earn a point for his side as he got the better of his man to head the ball goalwards, but sent it disappointingly wide as Bayern held on to claim the three points and keep the pressure on Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig.
