Philippines crash out after Thailand defeat

Thailand secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Philippines to continue their dominance in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup. A late Sarawut Masuk strike saw the team stroll into the semi-finals as the hosts were eliminated.

In a match of few clear chances, it was the Philippines who started well, and while both teams had strikes on target in the first half it ended 0-0 at the break.

The game remained tight in the second period, but Thailand would ultimately take the three points when winger Sarawut Masuk ran into the box and finished well past a diving Roland Muller in the 81st minute.

The result sees the Philippines bow out while Thailand cruise into the semi-finals.

In a tightly contested match at the Philippine Stadium in Bulacan, it was the hosts who got out of the blocks quickly and applied pressure on the away team. The Street Dogs won a series of corners in the opening 10 minutes but weren’t able to take advantage.

Yet, it would be Thailand who had the first real shot in anger when Peerapat Notchaiya had an attempt on target in the 11th minute. Philippines hit back when Hikaru Minegishi fired a shot wide in the 17th minute.

It would be a tight tussle with both sides exchanging shots at either end with the likes of Adul Lahsoh and Charyl Chappuis having efforts on goal for the War Elephants. Stephan Schrock then saw an effort go wide in the 36th minute for the home team. Just before the interval, Hikaru Minegishi also failed to hit the target with a strike.

After the break, the action continue to swing from end to end without many clear openings being created. However, later on in the half Philippines’ Mike Ott tested goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool who produced the save.

Yet it would be Thailand who would take the lead when winger Sarawut Masuk broke into the box and slotted over a diving Roland Muller into the left-hand corner in the 81st minute.

There were few further alarms but the War Elephants advanced as the Philippines crashed out.
