Thursday’s Europa League round-up

There were a number of high-scoring games on matchday 5 in the Europa League as Roma and Manchester United picked up big wins.

Internazionale's woes continued after they squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against Hapoel Be'er Sheva at the Yaakov Turner Toto Stadium, to crash out of the competition.

Mauro Icardi (12') and Marcelo Brozovic (25') gave the visitors a two-goal cushion at the break, but Lucio Maranhao pulled one back on 58 minutes before Samir Handanovic conceded a penalty and received his marching orders.

Anthony Nwakaeme (71') converted from the spot to restore parity and the hosts completed the dramatic comeback win in stoppage time though Ben Sahar.

Meanwhile, Roma sealed top spot in Group E courtesy of their 4-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen at the Stadio Olimpico.

The two teams went into the break at level pegging after Martin Zeman (18') cancelled out Edin Dzeko's 11th-minute opener for the hosts.

But the Giallorossi scored three unanswered goals in the second half as Dzeko (61', 88') completed his hat-trick, while Ales Mateju (82') added an own-goal.

Group J leaders Fiorentina slipped up at the Stadio Artemio Franchi as they went down 3-2 to PAOK, who grabbed a last-gasp winner through Garry Rodrigues.

Evgeniy Shakhov (5') and Djalma (26') handed the visitors a two-goal lead, but Federico Bernardeschi (33') and Khouma Babacar (50') responded for La Viola, before Rodrigues' late heroics.

Schalke maintained their perfect record in the group stages as they ran out 2-0 victors over Nice at the VELTINS-Arena.

Goals either side of half-time from Yevhen Konoplyanka (14') and Dennis Aogo (80' pen) made it five wins from five for the Royal Blues in Group I.

Athletic Bilbao came from an early goal down to edge out Sassuolo 3-2 at San Mames to go level with Genk at the top of Group F.

A bizarre own-goal from Mikel Balenziaga gave the Neroverdi a second-minute lead, but Raul Garcia equalised eight minutes later before Aduriz (58') put Los Leones in front and Lekue (79') sealed the win, although Antonino Ragusa (83') pulled one back for the visitors soon afterwards.

Manchester United kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout phase with a convincing 4-0 win over Feyenoord at Old Trafford, which took them second in Group A.

Wayne Rooney gave United a 35th-minute lead, before further goals from Juan Mata (69'), Brad Jones (75' OG) and Jesse Lingard (90') in the second half made certain of the points.

Southampton must wait until matchday 6 to determine their fate after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sparta Prague at the Generali Arena.

Costa Nhamoinesu scored the only goal of the game on 11 minutes to take Iron Sparta through to the round of 32, while the Saints must get a result against Hapoel Be'er Sheva in their final group match to progress.
