Full report:

It was a measured start to this match on a hot and humid day as both sides looked to maintain possession early on.

Vietnam goalkeeper Tran Nguyen Manh was the first to be tested as he punched clear a Baddrol free-kick, while Khairul Fahmi had to be alert to a good ball over the top from Luong Xuân Truong with Nguyen Van Quyet looking to pounce.

Both sides were initially restricted to playing out of defence and in midfield as the foul and yellow card count starting racking up against both sides.

A well-hit corner midway through the first half was headed clear by Malaysia defender Ronny before the same player saved his side from conceding a certain goal as he dispossessed Luong Xuan Truong just as the striker was about to shoot.

He had been set through on goal by a perfectly-weighted through ball through the centre of the park from Nguyen Trong Hoang, but Ronny was on hand to clear the danger.

Mohd Amri then fired a good effort just over the target from the edge of the box as Vietnam struggled to clear their lines following a good long throw-in.

Amri fired another long range effort in moments later, but it was just too far out to trouble keeper Tran Nguyen Manh who got down well to scoop up the ball.

Luong Xuan Truong then did well to create some space for himself on the edge of the box to get a shot away, but he just powered his effort over the Malaysia goal.

The best chance of the match though arrived six minutes into the second half as Nguyen Trong Hoang fed Dinh Thanh Trung with a superb ball into the box, but the player somehow managed to turn his shot around the outside of the left post.

Khairul Fahmi had no problems dealing with a scooped shot from Ngo Hoang Thinh on 51 minutes as Tran Nguyen Manh denied Mohd Syazwan on the volley from another good corner delivery.

Vietnam though appeared the more likely of the two sides to find a goal, as Khairul Fahmi made a point-blank save to stop Nguyen Trong Hoang from heading home a good Pham Thanh Luong delivery from the left-hand side on the hour mark.

Tran Nguyen Manh though did well six minutes later to keep out a half volley from Ahmad Hazwan before Nguyen Trong Hoang smashed his shot just over the Malaysia goal after a great give and go with Ngo Hoang Thinh.

The goalkeeper had done well to come out quickly and put the player under just enough pressure to see him fire over.

But he could do nothing to stop Vietnam from breaking the deadlock after a spell of sustained pressure and possession on the edge of the Malaysia box.

Nguyen Trong Hoang took his chance well as he cut inside two defenders before placing the ball into the bottom far corner of the net from the right hand side.

Khairul Fahmi was again well placed to make a good save from close range from substitute Nguyen Cong Phuong moments later after he had made his way into the box.

Malaysia though had a great change to net a late equaliser as first late substitute Mohd Zaquan Adha miscontrolled a cross from left in the box before getting a stooping header on target from a Mohd Rizal cross from the right that Tran Nguyen Manh managed to keep out.
