Real Sociedad maintained their push for European football with a 3-1 win over struggling Sporting Gijon at El Molinon on Sunday.
The two teams went into the break at level pegging after Duje Cop (28') had cancelled out Xabi Prieto's 19th-minute opener for La Real.
But two early goals in the second half from David Zurutuza (51') and Inigo Martinez (56') secured all three points for the visitors as they moved up to fifth in the La Liga standings, leaving Rojiblancos entrenched in the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao halted a three-match winless run in the league as Raul Garcia's 67th-minute goal saw them beat Villarreal 1-0 at San Mames.
Los Leones finished the weekend in seventh spot, one point outside the European places, with the Yellow Submarine occupying fourth.
Elsewhere. Espanyol continued their resurgence in the top flight with a narrow 1-0 win over Alaves at Mendizorrotza, where Gerard Moreno's 81st-minute goal settled matters.
The 12th-placed Catalans extended their unbeaten run to six games, while the Babazorros are two points further adrift in 14th position.
Granada were denied what would have been their first win of the season after they let slip the lead to draw 1-1 with Valencia at the Mestalla.
The rock-bottom Nazaries broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time through Mehdi Carcela, but Los Che responded swiftly after the break with an equaliser from Nani on 47 minutes to earn a share of the spoils.
