Full report

The 2008 winners took the lead 24 minutes in as Nguyen Van Quyet unlocked the home defence and found the opposite corner of the net.

The Vietnamese playmaker did well to open his body receiving a accurate through ball from Dinh Tanh Trung through the midfield, and with the presence of two defenders he slotted the ball cooly beyond the onrushing Kyaw Zin Phyo.

Myanmar found it difficult to make much headway in the final third with a lack of pace and power in the attacking positions but their persistence finally paid off after 73 minutes.

Diminutive forward Aung Thu produced a moment of supreme quality when he picked the ball up just outside the area, to set himself up on the left foot and smash home an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner of the Vietnamese goal.

But the home crowds voice lasted only seven minutes as the talismanic Le Cong Vinh converted a Nguyen Trong Hoang cross to restore Vietnam’s lead and secure all three points.

The Golden Stars win over the host nation sees them move to second place in the group, only goal difference separates them from first placed Malaysia – who they face off against on Wednesday.
