European World Cup Qualifying round-up

There were wins for the Republic of Ireland, Croatia, Turkey, Israel, Italy, Spain and Ukraine in an action-packed night of European World Cup qualifiers.

James McClean’s 48th-minute goal handed the Republic of Ireland a massive 1-0 win over Austria that saw them claim top spot in Group D with 10 points after four games. Austria remained in fourth, with four points, as Georgia and Moldova played out a 1-1 draw.

Valeri Kazaishvili had opened the scoring on 16 minutes for the hosts, but Aleksandr Gatskan found a late equaliser with 12 minutes of the match remaining.

Georgia stay one point and one place above Moldova, on two points in fifth.

An 85th minute Aleksandar Mitrovic equaliser saw Serbia claim a late draw with Wales, who looked to be heading for all three points following Gareth Bale’s 30th minute opener.

As a result, the Red Dragons had to settle for third place on six points, behind Serbia, who have eight points after their four matches played.

Spain pipped Italy to top spot in Group G on goal difference, following their 4-0 victory over FYR Macedonia. A Darko Velkoski own-goal on 34 minutes got the ball rolling for Spain, who claimed a dominant result, with Vitolo (63), Nacho Monreal (84) and Aritz Aduriz (85) all on target.

Macedonia, in fifth place, are yet to register a point while Spain have 10 after four games.

Italy, meanwhile, thrashed Liechtenstein 4-0 thanks to a brace from Andrea Belotti (11, 44), and a goal apiece from Ciro Immobile (12), and Antonio Candreva (32).

Liechtenstein prop up Group G, as Israel, who overcame Albania 3-0 with Eran Zehavi on target after 18 minutes, before Dan Einbinder's 66th minute effort, and Eliran Atar's 83rd minute goal, saw them end the evening in third place, with nine points.

Albania, in fourth, have six points after four matches.

Croatia opened up a two point gap at the top of Group I with their 2-0 win over Iceland where Marcelo Brozovic scored both goals on 15 and 91 minutes.

Iceland dropped from second to third – with Ukraine beating Finland and Turkey defeating Kosovo.

Ukraine, whose goal was scored Artem Kravets after 24 minutes, are in second place, with Finland in fifth, also with just a solitary point, while Turkey, in fourth with five points, saw their goals scored by Burak Yilmaz on 51 minutes and Volkan Sen four minutes later, leaving Kosovo bottom of the group with just one point.
