Napoli thought they had taken an early lead in the 13th minute when José Callejón controlled a ball over the top with his chest before stoking a volley past Gianluigi Buffon in goal, but the offside flag ruled it out.

Juve threatened in the 21st minute when Pepe Reina came off his line to deal with a corner. He managed to keep it away from Mario Mandzukic at the far post, but he parried the ball straight to Stephan Lichtsteiner, who failed to take advantage as he skewed his effort off-target.

Lorenzo Insigne will be disappointed with his 24th-minute effort as an attacking move saw the Italian forward played in at the far post, but he neglected the chance to shoot, instead looking to play it back across goal for Dries Mertens, only to fail to pick out the Belgian.

A minute  later and Juve forward Gonzalo Higuain looked to be in on goal against his former club, but Vlad Chiriche? came sliding in to deny last season’s Capocannoniere.

After a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken just five minutes after the restart, and it arrived from centre-back Leonardo Bonucci, who smacked a volley into the roof of the net after Faouzi Ghoulam had mishit his clearance.

Napoli were back on level terms just four minutes later, with Insigne lofting a ball over the top towards Callejón , who met it first-time with a splendid volley to level the scores.

Soon afterwards, in the 58th minute, Napoli could have taken the lead when they counterattacked with a numerical advantage, but Callejón pass for Marek Hamsík was behind the Slovakian, taking the momentum out of the move.

Gonzalo Higuain, facing his former club, struck in the 70th minute. The Argentine looked to play in Sami Khedira with a ball over the top. The German was unable to control, but it fell kindly for Higuain, who struck first-time into the bottom corner.
