The Bavarians were dominant right from the get go, and came very close in the 15th minute when a shot from Arturo Vidal was blocked into the path of Arjen Robben. The Dutchman dinked in a cross towards Robert Lewandowski but the Polish striker couldn’t connect with his acrobatic attempt.

The reigning champions took the lead soon afterwards in the 16th minute, with Vidal towering above the Gladbach defence to head Rafinha’s cross past Yann Sommer in goal.

Bayern continued to apply relentless pressure and had their second of the night thanks to Douglas Costa, who fired into the bottom right corner after Oscar Wendt failed to deal with David Alaba’s cross.

The second half continued in the same mould as the first, with Bayern playing most of the football, and their lead should have been greater in the 62nd minute after some great interplay between Costa and Alaba set up Robben with plenty of time inside the box. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid star skied his effort over the crossbar, however, when he usually would have buried it.

FCB took their foot off the accelerator in the second half, and Gladbach were edging back into the game when, in the 71st minute, Julian Korb floated a fantastic cross in towards the far post, where André Hahn was arriving to strike it against the woodwork, the closest Gladbach came to pulling one back.

Before long Bayern were back on the front foot, and they could have added to their tally when Costa beat his man on the flank and drilled a cross across the face of goal, but nobody was there to turn it in.

Bayern had a couple of late chances, with substitute Renato Sanches forcing Sommer into a save in the 90th minute, before Alaba’s free kick tested the Swiss goalie one last time.
