Full report

The visitors started well with Marco Fabian forcing Rene Adler to scramble across his goal with a shot that flew just over the target.

But Fabian was to play a pivotal role in this tie as it was his low cross to Branimir Hrgota that was turned in by Holtby.

Hamburger failed to register a single shot on target in an uneventful first half for the struggling side, and were also up against it when Dennis Diekmeier was dismissed in the 57th minute with a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Bastian Oczipka.

The loss of the player was significant for Hamburger who conceded just four minutes later with Fabian doing well to break through the home defence before finding Shani Tarashaj, who finished brilliantly into the top corner of the net after some superb footwork to create space to get the shot away.

Adler parried a 66th minute Branimir Hrgota shot but Frankfurt were not to be denied and went for the kill, with Seferovic easily getting past Nicolai Müller three minutes later before smashing home the side’s third goal of the evening.
