The match got off to a cagey start with neither side able to string any meaningful passages of play together.

Then out of the blue Timor Leste opened the scoring on 11 minutes when Jose Fonseca chased a high ball that looked to be going out of play. Fonseca pushed the defender off the ball and crossed low for Rufino Gama to tap into the empty net.

Timor were looking confident but then Brunei equalised in the 22nd minute from their first real attack when Adi Said stole in at the far post to nod into the roof of the net.

The goal settled Brunei and seven minutes later they went 2-1 up when Shafie Effendy cut inside a defender in the box and sneaked the ball past keeper Ramos Maxanches at the near post to take them into the break with their noses in front.

Timor Leste began the second half probing for an opening as they looked for an equaliser, but it was Said who almost scored again on 58 minutes as the Brunei man failed to get enough on a header when a free-kick was swung into the box .

Timor continued to dominate possession, but their attractive approach play was let down on several occasions by the final ball.

They thought they had equalised in the 76th minute when Rufino headed into the net from a free-kick, but it was ruled out as the striker had been standing in an offside position when the dead ball was taken.

Despite late pressure, Timor were unable to find a breakthrough as Brunei managed to hold on for the win.
