Liverpool vs Man United: Five classic clashes

Liverpool versus Manchester United may not be a local derby, but in England, this game is without doubt as big as it gets. Ahead of Monday’s latest clash at Anfield we take a look back at five of the most memorable recent clashes between the two giants of English football.

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United, March 2011

Dirk Kuyt was never prolific during his spell at Anfield, but he forever etched his name into the hearts of Liverpool fans after hitting a Luis Suarez-aided hat-trick to become the first Reds player to bag three against United since Peter Beardsley in 1990.
Kuyt hit two first-half goals before grabbing his third on 65 minutes when he knocked in rebound from a Suarez free-kick to hand United a third loss in a month and leave Arsenal breathing down their necks in the battle for the Premier League title.

Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool, September 2010

Another hat-trick, this time from Dimitar Berbatov, as the Bulgarian showed signs that he might finally live up to his £30 million price tag.
Berbatov bagged the first two goals, the second a stunning overhead kick, as the Red Devils cruised into the lead against a lacklustre Liverpool. Steven Gerrard then single-handedly pulled them back into the game with two goals in six minutes before Berbatov had the last laugh, climbing above Jamie Carragher to head home with just six minutes left.

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool, March 2009

Liverpool revived their slim title hopes with one of their best performances at Old Trafford in recent memory. United took an early lead through a Ronaldo penalty, but the lead didn’t last long as Fernando Torres pounced on a Nemanja Vidic error to level and a Steven Gerrard spot-kick put the Reds ahead at the break.
Vidic’s nightmare afternoon was complete when he was sent off for hauling down Gerrard before Fabio Aurelio curled in the resulting free-kick and Andrea Dossena completed the rout, lobbing over Edwin Van der Sar. The title challenge didn’t quite come off, but it was a memorable day for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool, January 1999

United pulled off a smash-and-grab as they denied Liverpool a first FA Cup win over the Red Devils since 1922. In an uncanny rehearsal of what was to transpire in Barcelona just four months later, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit late goals to snatch the win and take United into the fifth round just as it looked like Michael Owen’s second-minute header would be enough to see Liverpool through.

Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United, January 1994
Liverpool were way off the pace against champions Manchester United in the league and after going 3-0 down inside 25 minutes things looked ominous for the Anfield side.
Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs with a delightful chip and a Denis Irwin free-kick had left Liverpool shellshocked, but they fought their way back into the game thanks to two goals from Nigel Clough.
The equaliser came 11-minutes from time when Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock climbed above the United defence to bullet in a header and cap an unlikely comeback for the home side.
