Hamsik salutes stunning match

Marek Hamsik described Napoli's 4-2 defeat of Benfica in their Champions League Group B clash on Wednesday as a "stunning match" and a "great success".

The Partenopei maintained their perfect record in this season's competition, having beaten Dynamo Kiev 2-1 in their opening encounter, to top the group on six points ahead of Besiktas, who have two points, while Benfica are bottom with just a solitary point, behind Dynamo Kiev on goal difference.

Hamsik had opened the scoring on 20 minutes before Dries Mertens (51, 58) and Arkadiusz Milik (54) seemingly put the result beyond doubt with three quick-fire second half goals.

There was somewhat of a late Benfica resurgence in the second half as Goncalo Guedes scored on 70 minutes before an 86th-minute Eduardo Salvio strike.

After the match an enthused Hamsik held nothing back in his praise of the win.

"We played a stunning match", said the playmaker. "We played a stunning match, a great success against a top club.

"I scored an important goal to break the deadlocks but when I saw that in the second half we built up many efforts in a few minutes I understood that we would have reached a great success.

"This is a crucial result because we have beaten a top team and we are very proud of this success. We are happy and we should pursue this right track. We have to face another important match before the National duties and we want to finish off as best as we can this wonderful moment of the season."

Nikola Maksimovic, who came on for his club debut, in place of the hamstrung Raul Albiol, was also pleased with the way he performed in his first match.

"I entered at the beginning and at the end I wasn't tired at all, it's a great debut," said the Serbian defender.

"I'm proud of my performance, I performed a good and important debut". Nikola Maksimovic entered at the beginning after Albiol's injury. He displayed confidence and endurance.

"I wasn't tired and I played with no stress, this an important aspect. However, the most important thing is our success and how the team reacted for 70 minutes.

"Shortly before the end we slowed down but we had already taken the lead and we suffered just at the end. I haven't been playing for two months and a half and I'm very satisfied with my shape of form on the pitch."
