Real Betis returned to winning ways in La Liga on Friday as they edged out Malaga 1-0 at Benito Villamarin.
Joaquin scored the only goal of the game on 25 minutes when he headed home a cross from Charly Musonda to secure the three points and halt a two-match winless run in the league for the Andalusians.
The visitors had the better chances but they could not find a way past Betis goalkeeper Antonio Adan, who pulled off numerous saves in the second half to preserve his team's lead.
Gus Poyet's side made the better start and created a couple of chances in the opening 15 minutes, but Petros and Ruben Castro failed to test the keeper with their respective efforts from outside the area.
German Pezzella threatened again for the hosts on 20 minutes when he got on the end of Joaquin's corner, but steered his header wide of the target.
But Betis got the breakthrough just five minutes later through Joaquin, who headed past Carlos Kameni from Musonda's cross.
Zdravko Kuzmanovic almost found an instant reply for the Boquerones with a shot from inside the box that narrowly went past the keeper's right post on 27 minutes, before the woodwork came to the home team's rescue four minutes later when Federico Ricca sent his header against the upright from a corner.
But Betis held on for the remainder of the first half to take a slender one-goal advantage into the interval, and Adan made sure it would stay that way with a fine display of goalkeeping after the break.
He was called into action for the first time on 51 minutes as he denied Youssef En-Nesyri from outside the area and could only look on when Ricca thumped a header against the frame of the goal four minutes later following another corner.
Adan then denied Juanpi on two occasions as Juande Ramos' men went in search of the equalser, withthe keeper also saving from Diego Llorente, Ignacio Camacho and Sandro Ramirez in the closing stages to help secure the narrow victory.
