According to Ilkay Gundogan, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp advised him to move to the English Premier League in a telephonic chat in the off-season.
Gundogan, who enjoyed success with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, revealed that he sought out the German manager's advice once a move to the Premier League was on the cards.
"To be honest I asked [Klopp's] advice, if the Premier League was the right thing for me," the 25-year-old told Sport Bild.
"He said 'yes' and believed I would feel very well here and that the playing style would be perfect for me.
"It was good to have my impressions confirmed."

The German international also added that working with Pep Guardiola was hard to resist.
"[Guardiola] has this amazing charisma," added Gundogan, who started and scored against Bournemouth in a 4-0 win at the Ethiad over the weekend.
"Anyone with a bit of knowledge of football can see that football under Pep is always extremely dominant and extremely successful.
"It means a lot if he wants a player. I was the first he wanted to bring here and I was still injured at the time so that says something."
The Manchester City manager made Gundogan his first signing when he arrived at the club, but the midfielder only made his debut in September following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after an injury he sustained last season at Borussia Dortmund.
