FC Bayern München have just 14 fit senior professionals available for Wednesday’s clash with Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti does have a squad of 20 fit players, however, three of this number are goalkeepers and another three are more unproven youngsters.
A recent spate of illnesses and injuries have hit the team hard, with Douglas Costa being the latest player to be ruled out – the 26-year-old picked up a thigh strain in Bayern’s 3-1 win over Ingolstadt last Saturday (17 September).
In addition, Philipp Lahm, David Alaba and Mats Hummels are also not yet fit enough to play following illness.
Meanwhile, Holger Badstuber is also yet to make his return – the defender has made just 29 league appearances in the past four seasons due to the succession of serious injuries he has suffered.
However, Bayern have been boosted by the return of Jerome Boateng and Arjen Robben. Boateng made a substitute appearance against Ingolstadt, while Robben was an unused substitute.
The minor injury crsis has seemingly forced Ancelotti to make changes to his starting line-up – defensive midfielder Javi Martinez started at centre-back against Ingolstadt alongside Joshua Kimmich, whose previous appearances came in midfield.
The changes seemed to show as FC Hollywood were exposed on a number of occasions by Die Schanzer and it took a world-class performance from Manuel Neuer to limit the visitors to one goal.
