No separating Alaves and La Coruna

Deportivo Alaves and Deportivo de La Coruna shared the spoils from their 0-0 La Liga clash at the Estadio de Mendizorroza on Monday.

It was a highly contested, open affair with the hosts edging the tie in terms of possession, but while the game was there for the taking, a lack of precision in front of goal ensured the points were evenly distributed.

After a controlled start from the home side, it was Theo Hernandez with the first real chance of the game on seven minutes as he played a neat one-two with Ibai Gomez before spinning his man on the edge of the box and shooting just wide of the right upright from the left hand side.

Florin Andone should have done better on 15 minutes when he blasted over while unmarked inside the small box after controlling a headed flick from Celso Borges, from a Juanfran cross from the right hand side.

Faycal Fajr then shot just wide of the left post after chesting a half-cleared ball, before Juanfran shot well over the target after Alaves had failed to clear their lines following a corner.

German Lux was forced to punch clear a good Edgar Mendez ball from the right with Deyverson racing through to connect while, at the other end of the pitch, Marcos Llorente forced Fernando Pacheco into a good low save to his left ball with a header that was arrowing into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Juanfran, who was proving to be a good attacking outlet for Deportivo at right back, then had a shot blocked by Alexis before Llorente curled a shot from range wide of the target on 41 minutes.

Gomez scuffed his early second half shot wide of the target before Llorente fired another effort just wide following a great Mendez cut-back on the hour mark.

Borges then headed wide of left hand post from a Fajr corner after a superb clearing header from Laguardia, under pressure from Andone to award the set-piece.

Andone then shouldered another good delivery wide of the target as Fajr had Pacheco scrambling to get across his goalline with a shot from range on 62 minutes that flew past the left hand upright.

Substitute Gaizka Toquero nearly scored with a first touch volley that flew just over Lux in the Deportivo goal before two driving runs from Theo Hernandez.

The first run ended with a shot into the side netting while Deyverson headed wide from a Raul Garcia free-kick as Hernandez's second run ended with him being upended before he could enter the 18-yard area.

Andone's 77th minute effort lacked any real power and was easily collected by Pacheco before the Alaves keeper was relived to catch the ball as it came back off the right upright from a header by defender Laguardia from a Fajr free-kick.

And late Alaves substitute Christian Santos could only steer the ball into the grateful arms of Lux as he tried to direct a Toquero volley past the onrushing keeper.

The result sees Alaves move up one place into ninth on the standings, with six points, with La Coruna also moving up one place into 11th, with five points from their four matches played this season.
