Sparta Rotterdam winger Thomas Verhaar could barely contain his excitement after he scored his first ever Eredivisie goal in the 2-0 win over NEC Nijmegen.
Verhaar was integral to Sparta's promotion to the Dutch top-flight last season, scoring 24 goals and being named the Jupiler League player of the season in the process.
He missed the club's first five games of the new season with injury, but made his Eredivisie debut against NEC on Sunday and carried on exactly where he left off by scoring and helping his side to a victory.
"I was delighted to score my first goal in the Eredivisie and today I managed to play in a similar way to last season and I could not wait to score my first goal," he told NOS.
"We played well in the first half as a team and I received a lot of room to do what I am good at.
"I was pleased to be in the starting lineup today and I admit that I was impatient on the sidelines in our previous games this season. I could only train really hard and await my chance.
"Naturally if a team wants to reach a higher level then the competition for places only gets more competitive and I can only congratulate my teammates on their start to the season.
"We had to work hard today and remain disciplined and that why it maybe looked easier for us during the game but that was not the case. To play a game in such a manner demands a lot of concentration ,movement and stamina."
