Van Bronckhorst: We’re title challengers

After three wins in a week, Feyenoord manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is adamant his side must be counted amongst the favourites for the Eredivisie's title.

Brazilian defender Eric Botteghin's 82nd minute goal secured a 1-0 away victory in Eindhoven against PSV on Sunday.

This followed wins over ADO Den Haag, and Manchester United in the Europa League.

After six games, Feyenoord have a perfect record of 18 points, five points above PSV and Ajax.

Van Bronckhorst is thrilled with his team's performances, and also praised the ability of individual players to make the difference when needed to.

"I am extremely satisfied with my team in a week where we played three games for the first time against ADO Den Haag, Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven and to have obtained three victories is fantastic. Although We can still improve," he told NOS.

"This is first and foremost a team effort but our goalkeeper Brad Jones made crucial games throughout the game and Eric Botteghin played well and scored.

"That is our strength that every week someone from our squad will put in a standout performance. I must say the basis of our fantastic results in recent weeks is our team spirit," said the former Barcelona defender.

Feyenoord, who last won the Dutch title in 1999, are in with a very good chance this season at ending the barren spell, insists Van Bronckhorst.

"I am not amazed by the progression that Feyenoord have made in recent weeks and that is testament to the players and technical staff," he said.

"We are playing in a way where we are collecting points. I congratulated the players on a fine victory today and let them know that it does not stop here and that we must continue to improve in order to be successful.

"If you start the season in the way that we have done and we manage to continue in this vein then we are definitely title challengers," he stated.
