The question of whether Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is a better player has been asked countless times over the past couple of years.
Some have sided with the Barcelona talisman, while others have chosen the Real Madrid superstar, but for legendary footballer Pele, he believes that Messi has the edge over Ronaldo.
There is reasoning behind his choice, though, as he feels that Messi is a more complete player.
“I could mention some names but what has happened in the last 10 to 15 years, I think Messi is the player who was the most consistent all those years, no doubt,” Pele said. “We have had a lot of good players. Then Cristiano Ronaldo came late but it is different because Messi is the more organised, he scores goals.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is like the Ronaldo from Brazil, he is a good scorer no doubt, but to me as a player it is Messi.”
Meanwhile, Pele was also asked about which Brazilian player in the Premier League has impressed him the most thus far.
The Premier League is home to some of the best Brazilian talents in the world, but Pele singled out Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho for the most praise.
Coutinho has fast become one of Liverpool’s most lethal players and Pele admitted that a lot of people from Brazil were shocked when he was not selected in the national team for the 2014 World Cup.
“Coutinho is the player who everybody in Brazil two or three years ago was disappointed because he was not in the team [for the 2014 World Cup],” he said. “Some people joked that Brazil didn’t win because they didn’t have Coutinho in the team. He was one of the well-known players.
“Of course we have a lot of players in Europe but to me Coutinho was one of the best players who was supposed to be in the national team.”
