Wollscheid loaned to Wolfsburg

Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the acquisition of defender Philipp Wollscheid on a one-year loan deal from Premier League club Stoke City.

The 27-year-old fills the void created by the departure of Brazil international Dante, who recently linked up with Ligue 1 side Nice.

Wollscheid is relishing the chance handed to him by the Wolves, and hopes to play role in their quest to return to the Champions League.

"VfL Wolfsburg have established themselves in the top third of the Bundesliga in recent years and are now determined to return to playing in international competition," he told the club's website.

"That challenge is very appealing. I firmly believe we can achieve that goal, because we have a very strong team."

Wollscheid is expected to compete with the likes of Marcel Schafer, Jeffrey Bruma and Carlos Ascues for a starting berth in manager Dieter Hecking's side. And the Wolfsburg boss has revealed that he had been keeping an eye on the player's progress following their time together at FC Nürnberg.

"I have had an eye on Philipp since the time we spent together at Nuremberg and maintained an interest in how his career has developed.

"He is a very ambitious, success-hungry, player, who will breathe life into the competition for places in our defence," said Hecking.
