Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United beat the transfer deadline on Wednesday night to secure the loan services of Chelsea winger Christian Atsu.
The Ghana international makes the move to St James’ Park after spending the majority of last season out on loan.
Atsu started last season at Bournemouth but made just two appearances in the League Cup before being recalled by the Blues in January.
The winger subsequently linked up with Spanish outfit Malaga on loan for the remainder of the campaign, where he bagged two goals in 12 appearances.
The 24-year-old is relishing playing under manager Benitez at St. James’ Park, and can’t wait to strut his stuff in front of the Magpies faithful.
“I’m very happy to be at Newcastle. It’s a very big club,” Atsu told the club’s website. “They have good facilities and I think Newcastle have one of the best coaches in the world.
“St. James’ Park is a fantastic stadium with 50,000 fans; the fans here really love football so much and I can’t wait to play at this stadium in front of the fans.”
Benitez added: “I agreed with our fans that we needed to bring in another winger, so I am very happy to welcome Christian to the club.
“He has good ability and pace in the wide areas and also has good experience of English football.
“He has a different style of play to the other players we have at the moment and that will be important for the squad.”
