Rating the late, late gossip

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, the biggest news on Wednesday morning in the United Kingdom was the potential return of the flamboyant David Luiz to Chelsea and the potential departure of the fiercely loyal Jack Wilshere from Arsenal.

The Premier League’s transfer spending hit the £1 billion mark on the eve of the close of the transfer window, with that figure set to rise even further.

This after a slew of new signings on Tuesday – Arsenal drafted in Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi for a combined total of £52m, while Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason made the switch to Premier League rivals Hull City in a reported £10m move.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have been linked with a whole host of players in the past week, with manager Antonio Conte looking at defensive reinforcements after bringing in striker Michy Batshuayi and midfielder N’Golo Kante.

London for Luiz looking ever more likely?

Paris St-Germain defender Luiz could be in line for a move back to Stamford Bridge. This was reported earlier however with practically every British tabloid now running the story it seems have gained credibility.

The Premier League club have reportedly offered £30m plus add-ons for the Brazil international, who left for the French champions two years ago in a £50m deal.

Rumour rating: 8/10. Yes, it has gone up drastically recently. While the link is a particularly interesting one as Luiz’s free-natured approach to the game is very different to how Antonio Conte sets his teams up, far stranger signings have been made at Chelsea where owner Roman Abramovich seems to have the biggest pulling power.

The sheer volume of the speculation suggests that it is now a serious probability. The neutrals will hope it is more than that though. In terms of entertainment, any league is surely better off with Luiz than without him.

Wilshere waving goodbye?

In an equally riveting development, if not more so, Wilshere has been linked with a loan move to Crystal Palace.

In his time at Arsenal, Wilshere has often made clear his desire to remain at the club until he retires.

However, recent injuries have made that ideal a problematic one. Couple those physical issues with a Gunner’s midfield that is cluttered with quality and it becomes clear why a move away from The Emirates might not be the worst option for all concerned…for now at least.

The Sun and Daily Mirror reported that Wilshere looks set to choose Crystal Palace over Watford and Bournemouth following talks with Eagles manager Alan Pardew.

The Gunners received 22 offers from clubs in England and in Europe after it emerged that Wilshere was available to be loaned out.

While many low key clubs made up the bulk of that number, AC Milan were reportedly keen on bringing in Wilshere with the option to buy him at a later stage.

Rumour rating: 8/10. Wilshere to Crystal Palace seems extremely likely, with a return to Arsenal at some stage in the years to come. Wilshere to Milan seems unlikely though.

It was of course the Englishman who famously once quipped that he did not need an agent as he was going to stay at Arsenal for his entire career. We expect him to be loaned-out but to return.

Elsewhere, Tottenham seem ready to make a move for Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko while Stoke City have supposedly launched a late bid to sign Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony.
