Fiorentina missed out on an opportunity to go top of the Serie A table after being held to a 1-1 draw at Sassuolo on Friday night.
All seemed to be going according to plan when the visitors took the lead after just six minutes.
An early corner kick came flying into the box, and though Giuseppe Rossi's first attempt sliced off the side of his boot, the ball fell kindly to Borja Valero, who slotted the ball into the corner.
The chances kept coming for Fiorentina, and Valero nearly doubled his tally after producing a powerful attempt from long range, though Andrea Consigli was on hand in goal to avert the danger.
The keeper was called into action again to stop Josip Ilicic, while Rossi also had a shot blocked.
Despite Fiorentina's dominance, the home side would find an equaliser three minutes before the end of the half, Sime Vrsaljko sending in the cross which was headed into the goal by Sergio Floccari at the back post.
After the break, Sassuolo came close to taking the lead after Floccari sent in a curling effort that was just inches wide.
Then it was Fiorentina's turn to almost break the deadlock, Manuel Pasqual's powerful low drive kept out of the bottom corner by Consigli.
The visitors could have snatched the win at the death with a last-ditch attempt from Joan Verdu, but his shot from the edge of the box flashed over the bar.
