Gourvennec salutes first win

New Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has labelled his side's 3-2 victory in the opening game of the 2016/17 Ligue 1 season over Saint-Etienne at Stade Matmut-Atlantique as "mission accomplished" despite a nervy finish.

Les Girondins looked to be on course for an easy three-nil victory with goals from Gaetan Laborde (13) on debut, Diego Rolan (57) and Malcom (72), but Romain Hamouma and Alexander Soderlund had other ideas as they fought back with goals in the 81st and 89th minutes.

Saint-Etienne may well have even claimed a point from this tie but ultimately ran out of time as the hosts held on for all three points.

Speaking after the game, Gourvenne said: "They played the game I expected, with a lot of cohesion. They made some mistakes but we scored three goals. Misson accomplished in front of our fans."

Bordeaux are away to Toulouse at Stadium Municipal on Saturday, August 20 2016.
