What every EPL club needs: From Everton to City

With the 2016/17 Premier League season nearly upon us, we’ve run the rule over the English top flight’s club and sized up who needs what.

First up was Arsenal, Bournemouth, Burnley, Chelsea, and Crystal Palace, now it’s the turn of Everton to City…

Who have they signed? Ronald Koeman’s highest-profile signing has been Maarten Stekelenburg from Fulham. The 33-year-old Dutch keeper will in all likelihood be the first choice to replace long-serving US international Tim Howard who is moving back to his home country. Keeper Chris Renshaw and striker Bassala Sambou have also made the move to Merseyside, but both players are only 18 years of age and are more for the future.

What do they need? The Toffees are almost certain to lose star defender John Stones to one of several clubs willing to pay the reported £50m price tag. A player of his quality will be extremely tough to replace but since price may not be a concern it’s possible the club could tempt a quality player from elsewhere in the league to join Koeman’s revolution. With Romelu Lukaku also seems likely to leave so an imposing centre-forward would also do nicely.

Who should they sign? An ideal target is Swansea City’s Ashley Williams. The Welshman had a stellar European Championship and a sizeable offer and wage increase could well see him consider a move to the blue half of Liverpool.

Who will they sign? Koeman has spent the majority of the transfer window chasing Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and it appears as if they will be willing to pay the Serie A runners up’s reported €55m asking price.

Who have they signed? Steve Bruce has yet to bring in any players likely to make his first-team starting lineup. He has, however, strengthened the future of his squad with the signings of two promising youngsters. The 18-year-old goalkeeper Will Mannion was brought in from Wimbledon AFC for an undisclosed fee and 19-year-old Peterborough striker Jonathan Edwards joins the club on a free transfer.

What do they need? The six-month absence of Moses Odubajo due to knee ligament damage means that the Tigers are in desperate need of a fullback. The 22-year-old played 45 matches during their promotion season and will be difficult to replace.

Who should they sign? Former Tiger James Chester, who struggled to find a regular starting spot at West Brom, could be tempted to return to the KCOM Stadium. While the Wales international prefers to play in a central defensive role, he has been used as a right-back by the Baggies and could act as cover for Odubajo.

Who will they sign? Bordeaux centre-back Lamine Sane, a player with a similar profile to Chester, has been strongly linked with the club.

Who have they signed? Claudio Ranieri wasted no time in bringing fresh talent to the King Power Stadium, the most notable being striker Ahmed Musa and defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy. Musa spent the past four years at CSKA Moscow and cost the Foxes €19m while Mendy was bought from OGC Nice for €15.5m. Keeper Ron-Robert Zieler, defrender Luis Hernandez and Raul Uche Rubio have also joined the club.

What do they need? Ranieri dodged a bullet by avoiding Jamie Vardy’s departure to Arsenal but the loss of N’Golo Kante to Chelsea will be a very big blow. Mendy is an adequate replacement for Kante but finding one for Riyad Mahrez may prove a slightly more difficult task.

Who should they sign? Price is unlikely to be a factor so it may be time the club sees what their newfound fame and riches can do and aim very high. Dimitri Payet is certain to be tempted by every high-profile club in Europe and China but there’s no harm in tempting him with a solid wage increase and the opportunity to be part of something remarkable – a successful title defence.

Who will they sign? Norwich City’s Robbie Brady and Burnley’s Michael Keane, have both been linked with the Premiership champions. Left-back/midfielder Brady was propelled into the limelight after his Euro 2016 performance for the Republic of Ireland and centre-back Michael Keane has a relationship with the Foxes, having been loaned to them by his former club Manchester United back in 2012.

Liverpool

Who have they signed? Jurgen Klopp paid a hefty €41m for Southampton’s Sadio Mané and €6m for Mainz 05’s Loris Karius thus far this summer. Mané’s versatility will be a significant asset for the Liverpool boss, with the Senegal international having appeared in several attacking midfield roles for the Saints. Karius is a former Germany U21 international and could well challenge Simon Mignolet for the number one jersey. The 24-year-old defender Joel Matip also joins the Reds on a free transfer from Schalke 04.

What do they need? The Anfield squad is well stocked for a serious top-four push under the charismatic German and a marquee signing could well be superfluous. Some experience at the back won’t go amiss since long-serving centre-back Martin Skrtel’s time at the club has come to an end.

Who should they sign? Klopp and his coaching team are also famously dedicated to developing and trusting young players and there are no shortage of promising teenagers in Europe. Belgian central midfielder Youri Tielemans continues to impress at RSC Anderlecht and his club will face an uphill battle keeping an ambitious youngster in the Jupiler league.

Who will they sign? Recent rumours have linked the Reds with Newcastle United playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum and with Tottenham Hotspur bowing out of the race for the 25-year-old’s signature it appears as if Klopp is in the lead to bring the Holland international to Liverpool. Reports of the club’s interest Germany international Jonas Hector have also emerged. The FC Köln full-back is expected to provide competition for Alberto Moreno who had a poor 2015/16 season.

Who have they signed? Pep Guardiola has kicked off his transfer dealings by bringing in central midfielder Ilkay Gündogan from Bayern’s regular Bundesliga challengers, Borrusia Dortmund. The Germany international cost him €27m and was one of the most respected midfielders in the Bundesliga for a number of years. The new Citizens boss also secured the services of Spain international Nolito for €18m from Celta de Vigo. The 29-year-old’s Spaniard’s partnership with Alvaro Morata was one of the highlights of his country’s Euro 2016 campaigns. Premiership newcomers Oleksandr Zinchenko and Aaron Mooy also join the Sky Blues for the upcoming season.

What do they need? Neither Eliaquim Mangala nor Nicolas Otamendi have shown the level quality of quality necessary to challenge for the Premier League. The former, especially, has looked out of his depth. Furthermore, City fans shouldn’t be surprised if they see Joe Hart’s name on the transfer list sometime soon. After his dismal performance in the European Championship his new manager’s confidence in him won’t be particularly high.

Who should they sign? Kasper Schmeichel will be extremely difficult – not to mention expensive – to prise away from Leicester City and it’s very likely that the Dane will be loyal to the club where he finally stepped out of the enormous shadow of his legendary father, but money talks and City have more than enough of it to make this deal happen.

Who will they sign? Guardiola has his heart set on 20-year-old Schalke 04’s Leroy Sane. The young forward is one of the most highly rated prospects in world football and a move to one of the European giants is inevitable. Reports have also linked City with Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, one of the star players of Euro 2016.
