FC Bayern München have withdrawn Brazil forward Douglas Costa from participating at the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics in order to prevent the risk of further injuries.
Costa missed the recent Copa America tournament where Brazil failed dismally by being knocked out at the group stages and looks set to be ruled out of the Olympics too as Bayern wrap him up in cotton wool ahead of the new season.
The skillful forward suffered a serious thigh injury before the Copa America in June and, after examination by the Bundesliga champions medical team, the club came to the decision to keep him in Munich.
“I’m terribly disappointed,” Bayern executive chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s website.
“We all hoped Douglas would be able to take part in the Olympics in his home country, but the player’s health has to be our first priority.”
Die Rotten will now be hoping to have Costa available for selection in their first league encounter of the new season when they face off against Werder Bremen on Friday 26 August at the Allianz Arena.
