DFB-Pokal round-up

There were plenty of Bundesliga teams in action during the DFB Pokal first round on Saturday, with Schalke, Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen all coming through unscathed, while Hoffenheim crashed out.

Werder Bremen needed extra-time to get past third division outfit Wurzburger Kickers, but eventually overcame the Bavarian outfit through goals from Anthony Ujah and Fin Bartels either side of half-time in the extra period.

It was a far easier outing for Cologne as they put four past Regionalliga outfit Meppen, Anthony Modeste grabbing impressive hat-trick before Simon Zoller made sure of the result late on.

Wolfsburg were similarly unperturbed in their encounter with Stuttgart Kickers as Max Kruse, Bast Dost, Kevin De Bruyne and Nicklas Bendtner all got on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win at the GAZI Stadion.

Two penalties helped Bayer Leverkusen to a comfortable 3-0 win over non-league outfit Sportfreunde Lotte, as Hakan Calhanoglu and Lars Bender both converted from the spot after Stefan Kiessling had given Bayer the lead.

Elsewhere, second division outfit Duisburg felt the wrath of Schalke's attacking prowess as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Matija Nastasic, Johannes Geis, Leon Goretzka and Franco Di Santo made short work of Die Zebras defence in a 5-0 drubbing.

The upset of the round happened at the Allianz Arena as 1860 Munich shocked top-flight outfit Hoffenheim, with two goals in the second-half from Daylon Claasen and Fejsal Mulic securing a 2-0 win.

In the night's final fixture, Stuttgart were forced to come from behind against minnows Holstein Kiel as Daniel Didavi and Daniel Ginczek both scored to cancel out Rafael Czichos 37th minute opener.
