Southampton defender Jose Fonte has talked up the talent of Celtic's Virgil van Dijk, who has been heavily linked with a move to St Mary's.
Manager Ronald Koeman is looking for another central defender after Toby Alderweireld, who spent last season on loan at the club, decided to sign for Tottenham rather than stick with the Saints.
Steven Caulker has been brought in from QPR, but a long-term injury to Romania international Florin Gardos leaves room for another centre-back.
"I know he's a good player, obviously," the Portugal international said of his Netherlands counterpart, who has spent three seasons in Scotland, making over 100 appearances for the Hoops.
"He's a guy that we've been linked to, but he's not here yet. If he comes, he'll add quality to the team and even more competition at the back, so it will be interesting.
"We are fortunate to have three very good defenders, centre-backs, so whoever comes they know they have to do a job, so I just hope I'm selected."
Fonte has been at Southampton since 2010, making over 200 appearances to help the Saints climb from League One to the Premier League, and has dismissed speculation linking him with former club Crystal Palace.
"It's always flattering to have interest from other people, but I think it is what it is," he added. "I have responsibilities and I have a contract in this club."
