Full report

Arsenal dominated much of the opening stages without managing to find a breakthrough, while the Hammers had to ride their luck at times, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looking particularly dangerous for the hosts.

The Gunners came closest in the 32nd minute when Aaron Ramsey hit the crossbar. The Welsh midfielder struck his effort on the half-volley, with a deflection off Cresswell sending it out off the top of the woodwork.

West Ham were not without their own moments, with new signing Dmitri Payer looking very impressive on his Premier League debut. The French winger went on a winding run in the 37th minute, cutting through the Arsenal defence and firing over the crossbar.

West Ham then took the lead through Cheikhou Kouyate. With halftime approaching Payet floated in a deep free kick towards the Senegal international, who got there before the on-rushing Petr Cech to head it into the net.

Arsenal started the second half brightly, with Oxlade-Chamberlain picking up where he left off, while Giroud had a couple of chances in quick succession, first hitting the side netting before seeing a weak effort easily saved when he should have done better.

West Ham struck again out of the blue in the 57th minute when Mauro Zarate robbed Oxlade-Chamberlain of the ball just outside the Arsenal box and found the bottom corner.

Oxlade-Chamberlain came close again as the game entered the final 10 minutes. The winger blasted it into the side netting after a dangerous period of play inside the West Ham box as Arsenal became frustrated.

West Ham dealt well with the final 10 minutes by keeping Arsenal at bay while running down the clock smartly in the opposition half.
