TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have made a bold statement of intent ahead of the new Bundesliga season with the acquisition of prolific SV Darmstadt 98 striker Sandro Wagner.
Wagner finished the 2015/16 season seventh in the Bundesliga goal charts and was the second highest scoring German behind only Thomas Muller.
The Kraichgauer only just avoided relegation last term, finishing a point above Frankfurt in the promotion/relegation play-off spot, and their struggles were underpinned by their inability to find the back of the net, scoring just 39 times in 34 league games.
“After Thomas Muller, Sandro was the most prolific German forward in the Bundesliga last season,” Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen told the official Bundesliga website.
“We are committed to signing strong and charismatic players. In Wagner, we have somebody with a huge presence both on and off the field.”
Hoffenheim head coach Julian Nagelsmann is delighted to have a player of Wagner’s quality among his squad and is looking forward to seeing the impact he will have on the rest of the team.
“Wagner is a combative and strong striker,” he said. “He not only has excellent finishing, but he can also be well integrated into the build-up play and works hard when the opposition has the ball.”
