Baines out for three months

Everton have been dealt a blow with the news that defender Leighton Baines has been ruled out of action for three months.

The full-back missed the last two matches of last season due to an ankle injury, but after enjoying a pre-season campaign described as "perfect" by manager Roberto Martinez, he suffered an injury to the same ankle in training on the even of the start of the new campaign.

"Left-back Leighton Baines has undergone a successful ankle operation but is set to be missing for the next 12 to 14 weeks," the club said in a statement.

As a result, the 30-year-old will miss as many as a dozen Premier League matches, as well as five England fixtures.
