Antoine Griezzmann noted that he is comfortable playing in a match where winning margins are small because he's regularly in that position with Atletico Madrid.
The star forward's second-half brace propelled France into the quarter-finals after Ireland opened the scoring with a second-minute penalty.
"At half-time, we talked about what we were doing wrong and what we had to correct," Griezmann told reporters after the game. "I think we succeeded and that allowed us to overcome [Ireland]."
Atletico coach Diego Simeone's defensive strategy has been the subject of much positive and negative coverage over the last number of years, with his side regularly scoring far fewer goals than teams they challenge for the La Liga title.
"I'm used to games with only a few goals at Atletico Madrid. If you can't win by much of an advantage then it's important to do so by the minimum. What counts is to have achieved the victory," he continued.
The 25-year-old also briefly discussed his role in the France team and how it differs from that at his club.
"I feel more comfortable playing in the middle, where I play for Atletico. That's my natural position, but I'll play wherever the coach wants me and do my best for the team," he added.
