Schillaci backing for Insigne

Salvatore Schillaci has given his support to Lorenzo Insigne, despite the striker having only played 16 minutes of football thus far in Euro 2016.

Following a sterling season with Napoli, much was expected from Insigne at the European Championship. However, his presence for the Azzurri is yet to be felt in France, with Schillaci suggesting that Antonio Conte must have his reasons.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Juventus man heaped praise on Insigne, highlighting his vast ability.

"Insigne is an extremely strong player. But in Conte's head I am sure he has an idea of a squad and he has decided to use him only on occasion. He will have his reasons," the former Italy international said.

"It depends on the formation. In this Italy squad I do not see him as a second striker, but I would put him on the wing in place of either Candreva or Giaccherini."

The 51-year-old suggested that Insigne, who scored 13 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for the Partinopei, should be  played on the wing in order to get the best out of him.

"I would say mostly that he must play on the flanks as that is where he plays for Napoli," Schillaci added. "But I do understand it is difficult to omit Candreva, just as much as Giaccherini, who have both done very well so far.

"He can provide an extraordinary contribution as an extra man, he has the ability to change the course of a game."

When asked about Italy’s round-of-16 fixture against Spain, Schillaci said that Conte's side should look capitalise on La Furia Roja's defensive weaknesses.

"It is a better draw than Croatia as they are unpredictable. The Spaniards have some great players and they have the ability to dictate play," he said.

"But they are not aggressive and I believe they have some problems in defence. They leave space and we can exploit that. We should be optimistic."
