Griezmann commits to Atletico

Antoine Griezmann has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Atletico Madrid until 2021.

The France international, who is currently on duty with the national team at Euro 2016 in his homeland, has been linked with a move away from Vicente Calderon after two impressive seasons for Diego Simeone's side.

Griezmann has bagged 22 league goals in each of his first two campaigns with Los Rojiblancos following his switch from Spanish rivals Real Sociedad in 2014, and he scored for Les Bleus in their 2-0 win over Albania last week.

The 25-year-old forward was previously tied to Atletico until 2020, but he has now extended his deal by a further 12 months.

"I am very happy, very happy to stay in this family and in this project each year seeking to improve and the club, the coach and my team-mates let me," Griezmann told the club's official website.

"On a personal level, I would like to improve my goal-scoring, minutes played, matches played, assists… my goal is always to improve upon what I have done the season before. On a team level, we would also like to improve upon last season.

"The most basic thing is to continue with the key players we have and with our coach. We have the good fortune that the club wants to continue to improve and be a top club and that allows us to continue to grow.

"I can only thank the fans for all the support they have always given to this team and ask them to continue to support us as they have done up to this point. As for me, I want to say that I will continue to give my all on the pitch to thank them for all the kindness they show me."

Atleti sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero added: "I think this is great news for all Atletico fans because we are talking about an excellent football player, one of the best at his position.

"He has already shown his incredible talent over the first two seasons and with a huge growth margin. He is a player who is well loved and valued by our coach and by his team-mates and admired by the fans and I can assure you that today they are very happy with this news.

"The club has made a firm promise to retain key football players and Antoine is one of those, so we should congratulate him on this renewal."
