Atletico Madrid fans have a reason to get excited after the club announced agreements to sign two of Europe’s most sought-after talents.
Argentina winger Nicolas Gaitan will be joining Atleti after the Copa America after they agreed a €25 million deal with Benfica, while Croatia right-back Sime Vrsaljko will sign from Sassuolo for an initial €16m fee.
Gaitan had been strongly linked with Manchester United in recent times, but Diego Simeone was able to convince the playmaker to join Los Rojiblancos.
“Atletico de Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Nicolas Gaitan to our club,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“The midfielder is currently playing the Copa America with Argentina, and will travel to Madrid after the tournament that is being held in the United States, to finish all the necessary formalities so he can join the red and white team.”
A statement from the Eagles added: “Benfica, complying with Article 248 of the Transfer Code, announce that they have arrived at an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the definite title transfer and rights of Osvaldo Nicolas Fabian Gaitan for the sum of €25m. The player will be subject to a medical examination.”
The transfer of Vrsaljko, who is on international duty with his country at Euro 2016, has also been confirmed in Italian media.
“Right from the first moment that this possibility started to take shape, I told the Sassuolo management that I wanted to go to Atletico Madrid,” the 24-year-old said.
