Villarreal have announced the signing of Russia winger Denis Cheryshev on a five-year deal from fellow Primera Division outfit Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old has returned to Estadio El Madrigal on a permanent deal following a successful season-long loan spell with the Yellow Submarine in the 2014/15 campaign.
Cheryshev ended last season on loan at Valencia, where he made seven appearances in all competitions, after featuring as a bit-part player under coach Rafa Benitez in the first half of the season.
A statement on Real Madrid’s official website read: “Real Madrid and Villarreal have agreed on the transfer of the player Denis Cheryshev.
“The club wishes to thank him for his dedication and professionalism over the years and wish him luck in his new career.”
Cheryshev took to Twitter after the deal was confirmed, thanking Real for their support.
He wrote: “Thank you, Real Madrid, for giving me the opportunity to become a professional footballer. It’s been 14 years as a player of the club and I would not change it for anything.
“Thank you for showing me the values of a gentleman’s club and forming me as a person. A Madridista to the heart leaves. My best wishes for the future. Hala Madrid.”
Cheryshev missed out on Russia’s 2016 Euro squad due to injury, and to date has only made nine appearances for the senior national team.
