Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi has said Italy will remain grounded despite earning an impressive 2-0 win over a much-fancied Belgium side in their Euro 2016 opener.
Goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle put the Azuri atop Group E after the Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Sweden in the other group’s game.
While De Rossi was happy with Italy’s performance, he was quick to remind people that Italy failed to qualify from the group stage at the 2014 World Cup despite a victory over England in the first game.
Talking to Rai Sport after the game, the Roma star said, “The result isn’t that much of a surprise. I was named to the squad and I’m part of the 23-man side, and while I’m happy we won, it’s only one result.
“We defeated England in Brazil two years ago, but then we were eliminated at the group stage. We have to remain calm.
“Unfortunately teams will fear us after this result, but we can do anything with this mentality.”
Nevertheless, Italy coach Antonio Conte will be pleased considering his pre-tournament comments, during which he said, “It isn’t a good time for our football.”
Italy’s next game will be against Sweden in Toulouse on Thursday.
