Arsenal were made to work hard for the three points as they battled to a 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
- Arsenal 3 Sunderland 1
- Sunderland impress from the off
- Campbell nets opener
- Giroud scores at both ends
- Ramsey secures result late on
Joel Campbell had the Gunners ahead after several nearly moments for Sunderland just past the half-hour mark.
Olivier Giroud then netted an unfortunate own-goal to bring Sunderland level, but then headed home at the correct end to put Arsenal back in front.
Aaron Ramsey scrambled home a late goal to make sure Arsenal would take all three points.
Sunderland made a quick start to the game and had their first real chance of the game after just four minutes. Fabio Borini was released by a magnificent through-ball on the right to go one-on-one with Petr Cech, but was only able to fire his low effort straight at the Arsenal stopper.
On the 11-minute mark, Sunderland were nearly gifted the lead when Mathieu Flamini pushed a Duncan Watmore cross towards his own goal, Cech again doing well to make the save.
Arsenal, though, took the lead just past the half-hour mark when Ozil slid the ball through the defence to Campbell, who made no mistake to slot the ball underneath Costel Pantilimon to open the scoring.
However, Sunderland were back on level terms in the dying embers of the first half, Giroud firing the ball into the back of his own net from a M'Vila free kick.
On 58 minutes, Cech was called into action once again, first saving a long-range effort, before denying Steven Fletcher twice from close range.
And the Gunners were back in front in the 63rd minute, Giroud diverting a lovely Aaron Ramsey cross into the right net this time.
Giroud seemed in the mood to make amends for his earlier gaffe and nearly had a second only to have his goalbound header cleared off the line with 65 minutes on the clock.
Sunderland really should have levelled the scores mere minutes later when he went clean through on goal, but Cech was quick off his line and did well to deny the Sunderland man an equaliser.
Patrick van Aanholt really should have had his side back on equal terms with two minutes remaining after being slid through by Jack Rodwell, but could only blaze his effort over with only Cech to beat.
And Ramsey made sure of the result on the third minute of added time, scrambling home from close range after a low ball into the box.
