Former Real Madrid left-back Roberto Carlos has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to be crowned the world’s best player, regardless of his Euro 2016 performance with Portugal.
Speaking after the Corazon Classic Match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, Carlos believes the 31-year-old deserves to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or this year, after starring for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.
Roberto Carlos: Messi is a good player but winning the CL counts a lot. I think Cristiano, who decided the Final, will win the Golden Ball.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will win the Ballon D’Or, even if he doesn’t win the Euros,” Carlos said. “Messi is a good player, but winning the Champions League counts for a lot.”
“The best player in the world decided the competition. I think he’ll be the best in the world again.”
The 43-year-old also expects Messi’s Barcelona teammate Neymar to be a strong contender for the award in future.
“He must keep doing what he’s doing and he’ll be the best someday,” Carlos concluded.
