AFC Cup: West Zone wrap

Bahrain’s Al Muharraq and Al Jaish of Syria reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup after defeating Al Faisaly and Nafit Al Wasat on Wednesday.

Al Muharraq 1-0 Al Faisaly

The only goal was scored by Brazilian striker Elias late in the second half to give his side the 1-0 win over two-time champions Al Faisaly at the Bahrain National Stadium.

The visiting Faisaly were the better of the two side’s for most of the match but were unable to convert the chances they got into goals.

The 2008 winners were second best for much of the game but substitute Elias scored from close range in the 81st minute to ensure Isa Al Hamdani’s side go into next month’s draw for the last eight of the competition.

During the first half, Yaseen Al Bakheet and Baha Abdelrahman had slight chances for Faisaly but were stopped from scoring by solid defending.

The match looked to be going to extra-time time but that all changed in the 81st minute when Ismaeel Hassan passed the ball from the Faisaly goal line to Elias who tapped in to score and put Al Muharraq 1-0 up.

Nafit Al Wasat 0-1 Al Jaish
Al Jaish reached the quarter-finals thanks to a goal by Mohammad Hamadko in the second half to give his side the 1-0 win over Nafit Al Wasat at PAS Ghavamin Stadium.

During the first 45 minutes, there were few chances in a tight game but that would change after the break.

In the 78th minute, Hamadko gave his side the lead when he scored with a long-range shot to put his side 1-0 up.

After the goal, Nafit threw everything into attack chasing the equaliser but Al Jaish held out to book their place in the quarter-finals.
